Chagas disease — Serum syndecan-4

Submitted 2026-10-23

Field: Medicine › EpidemiologyType: No effect foundArea: chagas diseaseTarget: Serum syndecan-4Stage: full study

Hypothesis

Serum syndecan-4, which rises after heart attacks and in heart failure, would mark heart scarring and heart dysfunction in people with chronic Chagas disease.

What failed

In 56 patients, syndecan-4 did not correlate with heart scarring (P = 0.386), disease severity (P = 0.918), or ejection fraction (r = 0.02). NT-proBNP did correlate with both.

Broken assumption

A marker linked to heart scarring after heart attacks also tracks heart scarring in Chagas disease.

Why

The abstract does not give a cause. Syndecan-4 does not track the heart damage of Chagas disease, while an established marker does.
